Training - Instrument Rating - IR

THE INSTRUMENT RATING QUALIFICATION (JAR-FCL)

The Instrument Rating qualification allows you to fly only with the help of the navigation instruments you will find inside a cockpit.

Conditions to get the IR qualification:

  • Being at least 17 years old
  • Pass a complete medical visit (class 2)
  • Being holder of a valid licence (PPL, CPL) with a night rating qualification
  • Minimum experience of 50h as Pilot In Command
When those conditions are gathered, you can fly in IFR conditions with your instructor in (almost) every weather conditions. To get your IR qualification, you will also have to pass a theoretical and practical examination.

Our school prepares you for these exams :

The theoretical courses relate to 9 subjects:
  • Air Law and ATC procedures
  • Operational Procedures
  • Aircraft general knowledge
  • Flight performance & planning
  • Human performance & limitations
  • Meteorology
  • General Navigation
  • Radio Navigation
  • IFR Communications
The examination is a multiple choice questionnaire and may be divided in two.

At this time, we also offer the IR theoretical course in Distance Learning, with the support of our partner NORDIAN.

Contact us for more details.

The practical training in flight is divided into 3 distinct phases and must totalise a minimum of 50 hours of flight (max 35 hours in our FNPT II simulator). Our aircrafts are some of the most modern on the market for this kind of training.

The first phase : allows you to get familiar with « low visibility flight ». You will learn how to climb descent and turn by using the artificial horizon. You will also learn how to navigate with the use of your instruments (Radials interception, drift corrections…). This phase is quite fast).

During the second phase : You will start learning all different kinds of approaches: precision approach (ILS), non precision approach (VOR, NDB), holdings, race-tracks, procedure turns, and radio navigation with approach integration.

At the end of this phase, you will have a minimum of 25 hours of flight. You will use the radio following IFR procedures of controlled airspaces.

The third phase : Consists of an improvement of your flight techniques. You will learn how to manage failures, limited panel flights, decision taking, diversions… This phase ends with the in-flight examination.

Your flight experience will have to be of at least 50 hours. As soon as you totalize this amount of hours, get the satisfactory skill level and successfully pass the theoretical and practical examination, you will get your Instrument Rating qualification!
